How to Maintain a Positive Attitude During a Frustrating Job Search

How to Maintain a Positive Attitude During a Frustrating Job SearchHow to Maintain a Positive Attitude During a Frustrating Job SearchRejection letters, applications that took hours to do yielding nothing but deafening silence, waiting (and waiting) for callbacks after interviewsjob searches are filled with plenty of things that can crush ones spirits. While curling up with Netflix and a pint of Ben Jerrys may offer temporary relief, sooner or later youll need to get back in the groove and try to maintain a positive attitude during a frustrating job search.Enthusiastic applicants attract the attention of hiring managers, so do what you can to shake off a negative attitude. These expert suggestions can put you in a better frame of mind. How to Maintain a Positive Attitude During a Frustrating Job SearchConcentrate on what you can do.So much of what goes on with hiring is out of your hands. Instead of feeling that youre at the mercy of employers, look for ways to regain power.Waiting b y the phone for someone to return your call or respond to your email is an emotional disaster waiting to happen, says Henry Goldbeck of Goldbeck Recruiting. The fruchtwein important thing to remember is to focus on those things within your control while job searching. If you focus on your research, applications, follow up, networking, strategy development, etc., you will feel much better about yourself and your job search.Every activity is a win for you and brings you closer to employment- and you control it.Surround yourself with positivity.Got some Debbie Downers in your life? Give yourself permission to avoid them during this trying time. Its never helpful to hear, I sure wouldnt want to be you says Sally Srok, principal of Inner Compass Consulting. Your energy is your most precious commodity. Protect it. She notes that you might even want to create a response to nay-sayers, such as Actually, its an exciting time for me. Who knows whats nextAnd keep those good vibes going every cha nce you get. Put affirmations on post-its placed in the car, on the bathroom mirror. Tell yourself positive things. Literally- say them out loud. It works Srok says.Dont take rejection personally.Yes, this may be easier said than done. Job search rejection hurts. But employers have a variety of reasons for their selections. Some companies post a job that is actually already destined to a specific person who will apply for it internally, and external applicants have little to no chance in such a selection process, says international career coach Rebeca Gelencser. Some jobs are simply cancelled for financial reasons and applicants never hear back from the company. I worked as a recruiter and remember very clearly finding a great candidate for a job that welches posted on Monday and that was then deleted on Tuesday. It was not easy to explain or to digest.Continued confidence in your own abilities will eventually lead you where you want to be. Continually work to put forth your best sel f through tweaking your resume, developing new skills, and practicing for interviews- with the knowledge that a good match is out there somewhere.Remember the ultimate goal. Finally, keep in mind why you are going through journey. Hang up a picture of that new car you want to trade your clunker in for once you secure a job. Create a Pinterest board filled with images and wordsimagining you dream career. You wont be unemployed forever, Srok says. The right career opportunity will come along, and this will all be behind you. I promise.Continue Your Job Search

Drones Join the Fight Against Zika

Drones Join the Fight Against Zika Drones Join the Fight Against Zika Drones Join the Fight Against ZikaRobots are usually thought of as a high-tech solution to first-world problems, like building cars, vacuuming floors, or delivering pizzas. But developing countries have, arguably, bigger problems, and it turns out that robots have a place in solving some of them. Take the fight against the Zika virus.WeRobotics, a company based in Switzerland and Delaware, aims to democratize technology and get robots working for those in greatest need. Our goal is to make robotic technologies available to solve social issues in developing countries, says Adam Klaptocz, co-founder of the company. One way they do that is by bringing established technology to where its most needed, and teaching the locals how to use it and maintain it. Its not about dropping a Lamborghini in the middle of the jungle, says Klaptocz. WeRobotics has, for example, started drone hubs in under-mapped African cites. There, t hey teach residents of new and sprawling shanty towns to capture images from above so water and electricity can be brought to each home.At the same time, the company is working to create new technologies to meet specific challenges. The Zika virus is a big one.How do you use a robot to stop a viral epidemic? One way is to go after the insect responsible for spreading it, in this case the mosquito. Rather than use dangerous pesticides, Kaptocz is hoping to decimate the blood-sucking population by introducing hundreds of thousands of sterile individuals. You have to bring in a lot of mosquitoes, he says. You start off with 10 times as many sterile mosquitos as the population.Artists rendering of a small mosquito breeding lab. Image WeRoboticsThe sterile insect technique, as its called, has been used since the 1950s. It hassuccessfully eliminated the screw-worm fly as a problem in the US and helped control tsetse populations in Africa. But where 60 kilograms of flies can be packed into a Cessna and spread over an area like so much pesticide, mosquitos are a far more difficult animal to deal with. As anyone whos smacked one in action knows, theyre easily dispatched. A plane, no matter how small, is too fast for mosquitoes to survive an airdrop. Hence the drones. But slower speeds wont end the difficulties. There are many different challenges with mosquitos, says Klaptocz. They are sensitive and clump into little bunches. Theyre supper skinny things, with long legs and skinny long wings. They latch onto each other and are very difficult to separate. So Klaptocz and his colleagues are looking to create a mechanism for separating mosquitoes, or keeping them separate, and spitting them out one by one. Theyve turned to separating mechanisms found in the food industry. They also use food. Cumin, when damp, resembles a mosquito, according to Klaptocz, and using it solves one problem of experimentation. We cant spread millions of non-native mosquitoes all over Europe, he say s. If we introduce such a mosquito here, we are in trouble. For now, Cumin works as a stunt double. At the end of November, Klaptocz and his crew will head to Peru for a field test. How best to disseminate the fragile insects is only one of the problems that theyll have to solve. For example, we need to make sure they stay cold from the time they are sterilized till the time they are released. That might be easy in Europe, but were not sure what the situation might be in the Peruvian Amazon. Do they have refrigeration? Do they have power? What are the logistics? All this stuff you only find out when you go to the field, says Klaptocz. With the right mosquito-releasing mechanismandlogisitics, WeRobotics drone could have a massive impact on world health. For now, the economic space doesnt exist for someone else to work on this problem, says Klaptocz. Its our hope to push it forward and prove you can have a huge impact. Then if the market starts spinning, and it becomes a product you can buy, then maybe weve done our job.Michael Abrams is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Our goal is to make robotic technologies available to solve social issues in developing countries.Adam Klaptocz, co-founder, WeRobotics

How to be a great leader, according to 7 business and political greats

How to be a great leader, according to 7 business and political greatsHow to be a great leader, according to 7 business and political greatsThink of the bestbossyouve ever had - what tactics did she employ to get the team on board with zu sich mission? Studies show the best leaders areemotionally intelligent, innovative, andgreat communicators. It has also been argued that you cant be a great leader without being a greatfollower. And, according to Harvard research, the most impactful leaders are exceedinglyself-aware.Clearly leading isnt easy, but with the right set ofskills, each of us can become someone otherslook tofor guidance. ansicht powerful people have proven they can successfully manage teams, companies, even countries. Here are some of their time-tested tips for being the kind of leader people are inspired to follow.1. Be the kind of person others want to work withIts not necessarily how smart leaders are, or how charismatic they are, not how hard they work. Its whether peo ple want to work with them and for them, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said at anAxios event. Leaders should ask these questions, Dimon advises, to make sure thats the case Do they share credit? Do they blame other people? When the going gets tough do they become the worst people in the room? Or the best people in the room?2. Focus on trust over growthMarc Benioff, the founder, chairman and co-CEO of Salesforce, believes that growing a company should never be the top priority establishing trust with your employees and consumers is more important. Never put growth before trust. If you put growth above trust, then all of a sudden you create a toxic culture. People dont want to work in that environment or use the product, he said in an bewerbungsgesprch with theNew York Times. Hes seen the backlash and consequences of the growth-first mindset. You get these campaigns, deleteuber, deletefacebook. Its a referendum on the culture, not the product, he explains.3. Ask for feedback and put it in actionAt the Wharton School of Businesss 2018People Analytics Conference, Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, emphasized the importance of asking your staff questions like, Did you get what you needed from this meeting? and Whats your opinion? Leaders continue to improve when they draw on their employees on-the-ground knowledge and experiences, she explained.4. Know why you do the work you doTo create new businesses and drive growth, you need to have a leader who wakes up wanting to make an impact, Shantanu Narayan, President and CEO of Adobe, explained to his business school alma mater,Berkeley Haas. For him, that impact means to empower everyone from emerging artists to global brands - to bring digital creations to life and deliver them to the right person at the right moment. But whatever your industry or position, to lead effectively, you need to care about what your team is working towards.5. Be a little deafRuth Bader Ginsburg got some great advice from her mother in-law , which she says she has applied to everything from her marriage to her role on the Supreme Court it helps to be a little deaf sometimes. When a thoughtless or unkind word is spoken, best tune out. Reacting in anger or annoyance will not advance ones ability to persuade, she wrote in aNew York Times opinion piece.6. Keep your meetings to two pizza groupsJeff Bezos, Amazons founder and CEO, believes that a meeting should never include more mouths than two pizzas can feed, his biographer Richard Brandt revealed in aWall Street Journal profile. A good manager should keep teams to that two-pizza size, a piece of advice Bezos put into practice as company policy at Amazon.7. Be persistentBarack Obama taught his daughters that they can change the world - but it wont happen overnight. You have to be persistent. We get disappointed and we get frustrated. I always tell people that my early work as a community organizer in Chicago taught me an incredible amount, but I didnt set the world on f ire, hesaid at the 2017 Goalkeepers event. Despite helping build public parks for communities that needed them and setting up a job training program for laid-off workers, there was mucksmuschenstill more work to do. Those communities werent suddenly transformed, they still had huge problems, Obama noted. But I took that experience and then I was able to build on it.This article was originally published on Thrive Global.

Because carbohydrates are converted into sugar so easily, they objectively slacken the process of burning fat. The study reports that those that derived less than 40% of their calorie intake from carbohydrates were more likely to die early. The authors tracked half a million subjects and observed their diets (15,400 U.S adults and 432,000 adults from various countries around the world.) The data concluded a strong link between diets that have restrictive carb precursors to high mortality rates. This, when coupled with previous studies, indicates low carb diets to trigger over-eating habits, social withdrawal and to generally deprive subscribers of essential nutrients.Lead researcher, Sara Seidelmann, M.D., Ph.D, at Brigham and Womens hospital suggests a diet of whole grains, legumes, nuts and vegetables on the topic of longevity. There are numerous benefits withThe Mediterranean diet (which falls neatly into Seidelmanns dietary recommendation). It should also be noted that that Lancets study also warned about leaning on carbs for calorie intake in excess. How to Professionally Skip a Job Interview

How to Professionally Skip a Job InterviewHow to Professionally Skip a Job InterviewJob interviews, whether you want the job or elend, are worth going to for the practice. You have elendhing to lose and only experience to gain. You may practice your interviews with your friends and career coaches, but it is more helpful to go to a real interview. You get to see what happens when you have all the confidence in the world because you do not care if you get the job or not.And what is the worst that can happen? They choose to hire you.But for this post, we will explain the professional way to skip a job interview, if you are absolutely sure you cannot and do not want to attend the job interview.Give as much notice as possibleThe worst thing to do is just not show up. If another job is posted at the company in the future, they will have your name on file and they would be less likely to contact you. The best thing to do is to let them know as quickly as possible that you cannot make it. If you have another job interview, its best not to tell your interviewer. Instead, let them know you have a work or family conflict.Try and reschedule for another timeIt seems backwardto ask for a reschedule when you want to skip the interview, but it is professional to do it this way. Let the hiring manager know you would love to reschedule your interview for another time. Sometimes, they will reschedule, but most times they will just move on with interviews without you and promise to contact you for a job interview later. When you absolutely cannot make ittell themLife happens and so do life emergencies. If you cannot give a company 24 hours notices, contact them as soon as possible to let them know what happened. It is a real emergency, the person holding the interview will be understanding. It is better to be honest. Life emergencies happen and any company that does not show understanding isa company that should be ignored anyway. If you have to cancelbut want to rescheduleThere are times when you simply have to cancel and cannot reschedule. When you contact the company to let them know, try saying something polite, Im very sorry, but an emergency has come up and wont be able to make our interview tomorrow. Then, let them know, Im still interested in the position and would be extremely grateful if we could reschedule. It is uncomfortable when you have to share schwimmbad news and ask complete strangers for an interview reschedule, but it is better to be upfront and honest (without sharing too much private information). There is great value in todays business world to be an employee with interpersonal and verbal skills. Being able to communicate what is wrong to solve a problem is a positive business trait. If you just dont want to goGo to the interview anyway. As mentioned previously, job interviews are great ways to practice your interview skills while meeting possible future business connections. The best things always happen at the interviews you planned to sk ip, but went to anyway.Something odd happens when we interview for jobs we do not want. We are not held back by the fear of loss and given we really do not want the job, we tend to be a little more confident. When we remove the fear of loss, we tend to show our most positive traits we normally are in fear of revealing (ex sense of humor and true personality). And when all is said and done, what is the worst thing that can happen because you interviewed? They offer you a job. You like the people you meet. And you discover you would not mind working at the company. You have to turn the job down or they reject you.Its all a win-win when you have no fear of losing the job because you really dont care if you get it.

Paper portfolios For a paper portfolio, begin with a loose-leaf binder with divider: The first page can be a fresh copy of your resume. Or place that in a pocket in the front cover. Include a table of contents. This makes it easier for both you and the prospective employer to find items quickly. Display the rest of the content in clear page protectors. Group your work samples into logical categories. For example, you could organize by the specific skills used, the type of project, or product line. How you organize your portfolio is up to you, but make sure you label each item. Explain what each item is, your involvement, and the skills you used. If possible, use color copies or colored paper to add visual appeal. Another option is to include partial samples of your work and offer full versions if the interviewer requests them. Besides work samples, there are a number of other items you could include in your portfolio: Employer/industry information (articles on the interviewer, employer, and industry) Skills list, matched to the specific job Job match letter Workshops and conferences attended References, evaluations, letters of recommendation, and testimonials Letters of thanks Articles about you Stories demonstrating skills or character (preferably signed) During the interview, refer back to the portfolio any time you can. Look for opportunities to show and tell the employer what you have done. Each time, pull out a copy to show the interviewer. Have a photocopy available to leave behind. Online portfolios Online portfolios are an easy way for potential employers to view samples of your work. And that might just tip the scales in your favor. Include your portfolio's web address on all job search communication. If you participate in online networking, add a link to your online portfolio. This will make it easier for your network to recommend your work to others. Don't be tempted to quickly throw an online portfolio together. You need to research your technical options. And there are a lot of them out there - from blogs to free or subscription portfolios to building your own website.  Free services allow you to get up and running quickly with limited design skills. But they may come with some disadvantages: They may restrict how many files you can upload as well as the type AND size of the files. They may allow limited customization. They may show ads on your blog or portfolio. (This is how some can offer it for free.) The online portfolio solution you choose will depend on your needs, time, budget, and web skills. Carefully compare features to determine which one meets your needs. Blog portfolios can be an excellent starting point, especially if  used only for that purpose. They tend to be easy to set up and use. Most allow you to organize content easily. You can also embed almost anything. Blogs are often free, but many have subscription options with advanced features. This may be a good option if you need a simple portfolio. Free or subscription-based portfolios tend to allow  a wider range of file types, and larger files. These files are uploaded directly to the host site. Portfolio options are geared toward presenting graphic elements rather than text. These are ideal if you need to showcase work visually. Custom portfolios give you the most control over how your work is presented. They also require the most hands-on labor since you must design the site yourself. Free templates and tools can simplify the process. You will also need to register a domain name and host the site somewhere.

How to detach from work to preserve your mental well-being

How to detach from work to preserve your mental well-being How to detach from work to preserve your mental well-being Mentally distracting oneself from work during out of work hours can help restore emotional, cognitive and spiritual resources lost because of long hours, work stress and demands. Research has found significant associations between psychological detachment and well-being such as job burnout and life satisfaction. Getting away from work mentally, emotionally and behaviourally is most important when we are stressed, have a high workload or overloaded. When job demands are high for example, employees should use rituals to wind down at the end of the day to disengage from job-related thoughts such as avoiding the temptation to check emails or preparing for a meeting in the evening.Getting away from work is important â€" taking a holiday, using your annual leave or even just encouraging flexible working hours can help to feel less stress and burnout. This week, we have teamed up with Chloe Ward, a TMS Technician at Smart TMS, the UK’s leading mental health clinic specializing in Transcrani al Magnetic Stimulation, to give you ways to detach yourself from work.1. SleepSleep is important as adults need around 7-9 hours of sleep a night for optimal performance â€" any less or any more and your performance can be affected. However, it’s not just the quantity of sleep, but the quality too, so ensure that your sleeping conditions are optimum.Alternatively, a nap of around 20 minutes is very beneficial for recovery during the day â€" however, it’s unlikely that your boss would agree with that!2. ExerciseA brisk walk or a run is important to maintain fitness and is found to contribute towards physical and mental health. The saying goes ‘a healthy body contributes to a healthy mind’. Regular exercise can boost your self-esteem, can help you concentrate as well as promote better sleep. If you work in an office it can make a huge difference to get out for a walk on your lunch break or to build in exercise before work to ease you into the day or afterward to help you detac h from the day’s stressors.3. Your dietWhat we eat can affect how we feel immediately afterward but in the longer term, it can be hard to keep up a healthy pattern of eating when at work plus ensuring that you’re getting your daily intake of water. For busy times at work or for times when you are feeling low or stressed, try reducing or giving up caffeine and refined sugar. Likewise, it would be helpful to ensure that you have healthy snacks in your desk drawers â€" that way, when hunger strikes, you’re not tempted to reach for the biscuit jar!4. Relaxation techniquesRelaxation techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or yoga can help to increase positive emotions and reduce levels of stress. Create a buffer zone when you get home from work for 30 minutes or more for you to do what you like to relax, perhaps listen to some relaxing music. But the key here is to make this a routine.5. Be happyHumour and laughter are associated with reducing levels of stress, as well as other health-related outcomes including pain thresholds. The fact of the matter is â€" laugh more, worry less. It’s scientifically proven!6. Use your support networksSocial support can minimize stressful situations at work and home.Emotional support can help us detach from work and recover after a long day. Talking about your feelings can help you maintain your mental health and deal with times when you feel troubled but it’s important to remember that talking about your feelings isn’t a sign of weakness; it is a part of taking charge of your well-being and doing what you can to stay healthy.Identify someone you feel comfortable with and who will be supportive when you are talking about work, your frustrations and how it’s making you feel.7. You are more than your jobRemember that you are more than your job. In psychology, there is a concept called self-complexity which suggests that there are many facets to your identity. Research has shown that exploring these facets can help you cope with experiences like failure, stress or depressions. It’s important to embrace and derive value from other roles in your life including your relationships and your hobbies, schedule time to see a friend or pick up a new hobby or interest. The ability to detach emotionally from your work can make you better as a whole â€" both on a day to day basis but also in your career role.8. Make plansGive yourself a reason to leave the office at a normal hour. Schedule an event, appointment or catch up with friends after work so that you have some motivation to help you focus throughout the day during office hours. Planning an enjoyable and social activity in the evening is a great way to destress and will give you something to look forward to during the day!Charlotte Giver is the founder and editor-in-chief at Your Coffee Break. 5 negotiation skills to help flip no to yes

5 negotiation skills to help flip 'no' to 'yes' 5 negotiation skills to help flip 'no' to 'yes' “What if they say no?”As facilitators, we hear this anxious question all the time from the professionals we teach negotiation skills to.The good news is that you don’t have to be experienced at negotiation to start challenging “No.” In fact,  there are numerous ways to maneuver  and pivot through rejection that will actually help you get more of what you want. Below is what we hope an inspiring roundup of stories and techniques that show how women have flipped ‘No’ to ‘Yes.’So you tried to negotiate something at work and got a big, fat ‘No.’ Here are 5 ways to flip that ‘No’ to a ‘Yes.’CLICK TO TWEET1. Be curiousJodi Glickman, CEO of  GreatOnTheJob.com, applied to Cornell’s Johnson Graduate School of Management (JGSM) in hopes of earning a Park Leadership Fellowship, a $72,000 scholarship for two years. She got the news that she was admitted to JGSM but was not offered the fellowship.“Basically, I called the director of the program to lobby for my ca ndidacy,” said Glickman. As part of her lobbying, Glickman asked questions to understand what criteria was used to pick candidates. “Turns out, the director hadn’t seen my application because my GMAT was too low and candidates had to have a higher threshold. I didn’t know that â€" but it was a program for leaders committed to community service and leadership and here I had been a Peace Corps volunteer and policy analyst at the EPA. The director was like, ‘How come I never saw your application?!’ The next day the director called me to personally offer me the fellowship.”2. Defang ‘no’Before her novel, “The Leavers,” was published, author Lisa Ko set out to get 50 ‘No’s’ for her book in one year. Her method of developing a tough-mindedness for ‘No’ served as a strategy for improving the odds of getting her book published. When she submitted her application to the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, she did not expect to win the $25,000 pri ze, and she was surprised when she did.Once published, the novel, garnered multiple awards and was listed as a finalist for the National Book Award.  Ultimately, Ko’s strategy for ‘No’ turned out to be a winning strategy for ‘Yes.’3. Ask for a different ‘yes’For one of the authors of this piece, Selena Rezvani â€" making a pitch, getting a ‘No’ and then asking for a different ‘Yes’ yielded great results. In 2010 Rezvani interviewed for a global spokesperson role with LinkedIn. But a few days later she got a polite email saying, “We’re going to pass â€" but stay in touch”.A week later, Rezvani took them at their word. Rezvani pitched LinkedIn on co-producing a study on professionals’ negotiation habits â€" timing the results with the launch of her book,  Pushback. And, just like that, LinkedIn agreed. The result of the partnership was a co-designed, worldwide survey, which garnered exciting results. LinkedIn engaged a major PR firm and made Rezvani the s pokesperson of the study. She and her new book ended up in major media alongside the study results, covered by the LA Times, MORE magazine, MSNBC, CNN, Today and many others.4. Show you  believe in yourselfSarah Eadie, a marketing professional in Texas, turned a rejection into a dream job offer by demonstrating her unshakeable self-belief. After being rejected from her top choice company following a first-round interview, Eadie stayed positive and continued to build rapport with the recruiter. The recruiter called Eadie to confirm the rejection. Eadie recounted, “The recruiter said previously that she might be able to get me a networking coffee meeting with the hiring manager even if I wasn’t offered an onsite interview. So, I brought it up to her.”Soon Eadie was onsite for a coffee meeting with the hiring manager. Rather than press for the job she didn’t get, Eadie focused on future possibilities. “I gave her my background elevator pitch … and thanked her in advance for taking the time to share her insights. After we’d chatted for a bit, she then asked me if I’d be open to a position with the company!”In the end, the hiring manager adjusted the open position to accommodate Eadie. With the help of Jamie Lee, one of the authors of this piece, Eadie successfully negotiated a job offer that resulted in a $15K salary increase.5.  Ditch ‘nice’ for ‘brave’From a young age, we encounter gender-normative expectations in which boys are expected to brave risks and girls to be ‘nice.’ Successful and entrepreneurial women flip that script and brave risks, even in the face of repeated rejection. In 2004, Stephanie Newby founded  Golden Seeds, a venture investment firm focused solely on women-led ventures. In doing so, she created investment opportunities for women investors and funding opportunities for women-led startups, a cohort that has struggled to gain equal footing with their male counterparts in the race for capital. One of those funded s tartups was  Crimson Hexagon. Its co-founder, Candace Fleming, pitched 30 venture firms and was turned down by all until it raised $1.8M from Golden Seeds in 2008. Newby played a critical role in that investment and in 2012, she became CEO of the company. It’s not a question of if you’ll hear “No,” in your career, it’s when. Remembering that rejection is common â€" and often surmountable â€" will help you be ready to pivot. What’s your favorite way to flip a ‘No’ to a ‘Yes’?This article was co-authored by  Jamie Lee , Leadership and negotiation coach, and originally written for  Cartier â€" Women’s Initiative Awards an international business plan competition created to identify, support and encourage projects by women entrepreneurs.

Write the Resume Before the Job Search

Write the Resume Before the Job Search Write the Resume Before the Job Search Tim Ide changed his resume and discovered he was qualified for more jobs than he ever imagined. The resume rarely comes first. But perhaps it should.A job search typically begins when a job seeker decides what he wants to do and for what jobs he wants to apply. He will usually craft a resume designed to land those jobs. Tim Ide of Carlton, Ore., would argue those job seekers have it backward.Ide, the general manager of a small electronics-manufacturing plant near Portland, Ore., unintentionally put his resume first after a rewrite and let the document tell him the jobs for which to apply.Ide had his resume rewritten by Don Burns, a certified professional resume writer who works with the Ladders, and the resulting resume convinced Ide he had skills beyond his position and industry. It’s even allowed him to consider jobs in locations with a warmer climate, important to the health of his wife, he said.“The re-done resume gave me a shotgun instead of a rifle,” he said. “I realized I could branch out a bit.Ӊ€œI am looking at positions (now) that would be the director of operations in an electronics-manufacturing business,” he said. “I have looked at some CFO (chief financial officer) positions in other businesses. The position I applied for today is general manager of a business that imports and resells motorcycle accessories.”A resume often puts into focus the pieces of a career and the jobs a candidate is qualified to do, said Burns. Often, he said, it requires a dispassionate outsider to help see the whole picture.“People often come to a realization after redoing their resumes,” he said. “What I do is almost like portrait painting. I’m an outsider, putting together their portrait. Some people look at their rewritten resume and say, ‘It doesn’t look like me.’ But I don’t make anything up. When you have an outsider look at you objectively, you are going to get a new view of yourself.Ӊ€˜Death by bullets’Ide has been at the same c ompany for 10 years but decided to look for a job this year after the company was acquired by a new owner and his wife developed some “minor medical issues” that doctors have told him would benefit from living in a warmer climate. He’s been researching jobs in warmer cities, such as Orlando, as well as Oregon.Ide had recently updated his resume to address his current job description and title. “But when I got the critique back (as part of Ladders premium membership), it said â€" let me see if I can remember this correctly â€" ‘death by bullets,'” he said.Bullet points and keywords (a resume standard) are important but often overused, Burns said. A laundry list of job descriptions does little to explain what he brings to the job and can confuse the employer.“Often, an employer can’t determine from their resume what job the employee wants,” he said. “Tim’s resume was disorganized. You could see he had a background in operations, but most of the recent information was a jumble; it was more general management. He lumped together all types of skills â€" marketing, finance, sales, human resources â€" which needed to be presented as more of a progression. We did that with a summary paragraph.”It’s important that the potential employer sees the portrait the candidate wants to paint and quickly, Burns said.“Someone looks at a resume for 10 or 15 seconds,” he said. “They look at what the person has done, where he has been. The resume needs to present that information, plus accomplishments, clearly.”Ide said that he understood why the changes were necessary. “When I got the critique back, I agreed with it in the sense that it was definitely much less oriented toward accomplishments,” he said. “I’m more oriented toward very concise summaries. And yet, I recognize that not all people think the same way I do. The rewrite was such that it was more verb-oriented. More of ‘I accomplished this,’ as opposed to ‘this was my task.’ “For instance,” he continued, “I originally had, ‘responsible for all aspects of operations.’ The rewrite came out, ‘designed and implemented cost-accounting processes.’ It broke down all the functions of my job and gave information on my accomplishments instead of ‘responsible for all aspects of accounting and human resources.'”Transferring skillsNew resume in hand, Ide is looking at positions as a CFO, director of operations, general manager, even a job as marshal of a court of appeals in Florida. “This position is the administrative boss of the court, the person who handles the personnel, the budget; it seems like a great position. It uses a lot of my skills but is different than manufacturing stuff that I’ve been doing.”While all of these jobs sound a little different, they all require the skills of someone who can manage a project, manage a budget, handle human resources and more.“My skills are transferrable,” he said. “If I could find a job that w ould pay me to play with motorcycles, I couldn’t think of anything that would be much better,” he said. “I do have options. I just have to convince other people.”

Writing an Accounting Job Description

Writing an Accounting Job Description Writing an Accounting Job Description An accounting job description that's thorough and well-written helps attract qualified candidates to your company - and helps deter unqualified applicants. An accurate accounting job description can serve as a basis for your employment posts and, later, as a template against which an employee's performance can be measured. Here are some tips on what to include in your job description: Key areas to address in job descriptions In an accounting job description, requirements can differ significantly among specialties (e.g., tax vs. cost accountants) and between senior- and entry-level positions. The key areas to address are the following: Experience - How many years of experience does your position require? Accounting managers, for instance, should have at least five years of experience, while senior accountants need at least three. Education - Does the job you̢۪re posting require an undergraduate degree in accounting or finance, for example, or is it also open to business administration majors? How much of an edge will having an MBA give a candidate? Certifications - Does this position require a professional certification such as CPA or Certified Internal Auditor designation? Technical skills - Do candidates need specialized technical know-how, such as proficiency with automated payroll processing services or operating databases? Soft skills - In addition to detailing the skills and experience you're seeking, your accounting job description should list the soft skills a new employee will need to fit in with your team. Valuable soft skills for accounting jobs include being analytical, critical reasoning, communication and presentation proficiencies, and multicultural awareness. Describe the job Once you've established the basics of the position, flesh it out to give potential applicants a better sense of the role and what it's like to work at your organization. Here are some points to consider adding to your accounting job description: Compensation - Be as specific as possible about the range you will pay. You can also use the accounting job description to highlight the benefits that come with the job. The 2018 Robert Half Salary Guide provides guidance on appropriate starting pay for more than 190 positions in the accounting and finance fields. The guide also has information on customizing salary ranges for more than 135 U.S. cities. You can also use the Salary Calculator to search job salaries by ZIP code. Responsibilities - State the immediate and long-term objectives for the position. Detail the new hire's daily work responsibilities, as well as his or her role on any less-frequent - though still critical - programs or initiatives. For example, responsibilities for an experienced tax accountant might include researching tax laws and regulations, completing corporate tax returns, assisting during tax audits, and responding to notices from taxing authorities. Logistics - Specify to whom the new hire will report, where work will be performed and the other people in your organization he or she can expect to work with regularly. If the new recruit will have people reporting to him or her, the accounting job description needs to indicate this clearly. Other topics to address include attendance requirements and telecommuting options, if any. Your organization - Promote your company culture and strengths. At small businesses, employees often have broader responsibilities than they might in a larger firm, as well as opportunities to learn new skills and get promoted more quickly. If you're a larger company, you can emphasize the pride employees take in being part of a well-known business. Don't forget the fine print Most accounting positions are in the exempt category - meaning they are not eligible for overtime pay - but some can be nonexempt, and you need to state this in either case. Also make it clear the list of duties include in the accounting job description isn't exhaustive and may change over time. Just to be safe, you may want to get legal advice when categorizing the position. Sample job descriptions for accounting jobs Below are a couple of sample accounting job descriptions to help get you started. Keep in mind that these are just a starting point and should be customized to better fit the exact position you're hoping to staff. Creative Resume Formats What You Need to Know

Creative Resume Formats What You Need to Know Creative Resume Formats What You Need to Know After submitting resume after resume and hearing nothing back, you might be considering a daring new approach. Maybe its time to ditch that trusty Microsoft Word resume template in favor of a bold, creative resume that wont be missed and cant be ignored. Before you spend your weekend crafting your resume into a pizza box like Zvina Luke, be sure you know when an outside-the-box resume will bring positive attention and when it will eliminate you from consideration. Creative Resumes are for Creative Industries This is the reason I love being a graphic designer, writes Luke on her  pizza box resume web page. Our resume doesnt have to be formal, and shouldnt be limited in a piece of paper, in fact the more out of the box it is the better. A graphic designers qualifications include their design aesthetics, ideas, and ability to create. Whether theyre building something like Luke above or showing off their design chops like the examples below, the resume format is an extension of the resume itself. If your creative resume doesnt align with your position or industry, it could be dismissed as a gimmicky stunt. Creative Resume vs. Applicant Tracking System Even a talented graphic designer could design themselves right out of consideration without an understanding of how the application process works.  Many companies utilize applicant tracking systems (ATS) to filter applicants. If youre applying for a job online, youre probably applying through an ATS. This poses a problem for anyone uploading a custom resume. from  Enhancv These examples of creative resumes by graphic designers  Linda Yuki Nakanishi, Harrison Carter Watkins, and Hagan Blount  will impress other artists and are effective in the right context, but they might not be ATS friendly resumes. ATS scan the text of your resume for recognizable sections including your name, contact information, work experience, and hard skills. If the ATS cant properly parse your resume, the hiring manager wont find you when they search their pool of applicants. Jobscans resume scanner parses your resume the same way an ATS would. Upload your custom creative resume to get a better understanding of how your resume looks through the eyes of an ATS. Account for Company Size Most large companies,  including 98% of Fortune 500 companies, use an ATS.  If a company uses an ATS, it is likely that the hiring manager will view the ATS applicant report generated from your resume rather than the original resume file you uploaded. Furthermore, if you manage to hand-deliver an unconventional resume to a large company that uses an ATS, you risk the company rejecting your resume for not following protocol. If they accept your application, an employee might have to manually enter the information from your resume into the ATS. Neither scenario helps you get hired. Small companies (under 50 employees) are less likely to use ATS and hiring managers are more accessible. A job seekers crafty resume is more likely to be seen and appreciated in a smaller environment. Going Viral Isnt the Goal, Employment Is Earning attention for your creative resume might help open some doors, but going viral doesnt guarantee a successful job search. Creative resumes and bold job hunting tactics provide good fodder for social media, blogs, and news outlets, but you still have to present yourself as the most qualified candidate for the job in order to turn 15 minutes of fame into a job offer. Back in October 2016, a young marketing professional went viral for his daring strategy of posing as a Postmates delivery person and hand-delivering donuts that contained his resume to dozens of top Silicon Valley ad and tech firm CEOs. He was rewarded with at least 10 interviews, received public praise from some of the CEOs, and was  covered by countless media outlets. But none of the news stories ended in a job offer. You might be willing to do anything to get your foot in the door, but youre better off sticking with convention unless your industry specifically rewards creative ambition. Your time will be better spent  optimizing your resume. In most situations, tailoring your skills and experience to the job you want will help you stand out from the crowd more than any gimmick.

The Argument About H1b Premium Processing Resume 2019

The Argument About H1b Premium Processing Resume 2019 If You Read Nothing Else Today, Read This Report on H1b Premium Processing Resume 2019 If these conditions aren't met, your petition will probably lead to a denial. There are some important points to consider about H-1B transfer petitions. They need to be presented more like other legal cases with a comprehensive legal brief filed along with the other required documentation. Visa petitions might be denied for incomplete information or absence of translations. New Step by Step Roadmap for H1b Premium Processing Resume 2019 Combat Local Labor ShortagesMany employers are in areas with a labor shortage and might not have accessibility to qualified U.S. workers who would like to move permanently to your region. However, in case the Department of Labor finds any difficulties with your application, it might be rejected. This system makes it possible for these doctors to work in underserved areas where there might be a lack of ph ysicians. It's normal for immigration officials to suspend expedited processing for a couple weeks each year so that it can handle a high volume of applications. Whatever They Told You About H1b Premium Processing Resume 2019 Is Dead Wrong...And Here's Why You should apply as speedily as possible for new H-1B and premium processing is a very good selection. A duplicate of the transfer notice ought to be connected to the premium processing request, to be able to steer clear of any delays as a consequence of the transfer. The H-1B visa procedure is complex. While premium processing doesn't increase your odds of being selected in the lottery or your probability of being approved by the USCIS, for a lot of people that are extending or transferring their statuses, premium processing may be a terrific benefit. If you haven't, then the next time you submit a petition for a transfer, the USCIS will determine whether you continue to be cap-exempt. USCIS will notify the precise date later. USCIS provides this service for a courtesy. When it's approved, USCIS may still ask to receive a new visa stamping by going from the country. No, there's no premium processing for LCA. If you would like to talk on the telephone, I am readily available to do that for another fee. There isn't any way to expedite it and there is absolutely no fee for it. This fee is worth if you want the approval once possible. Now you've found a sponsor, that employer must receive a Labor Condition Application for your benefit from the Department of Labor. Some employer would request that you pay for the Premium Processing, though others would bear the price of upgrading to Premium Processing. Your attorney ought to be in a position to upgrade to premium by filing the extra fee, alongside the I-907 form. Tax filing rules for somebody in H-1B status could be complex, based on the individual circumstance. It is necessary for petitioners to construct the case with supporting documents. Also, in the event the petition is approved, you can start working immediately and don't will need to wait until October. Because H-1B transfer petitions aren't subject to the cap, the petition can be submitted at any moment and you aren't restricted to waiting until October to do the job. A tax professional who's knowledgeable in regards to the rules for foreigners might be consulted. An H-1B transfer is the ideal plan of action for those who are currently on H-1B visa status but wish to transfer their status to another employer. There are different kinds of proof and you ought to contact yoru Immigration counsel to examine exceptional conditions. Presenting a complete legal case has proven hugely profitable. The Appeal of H1b Premium Processing Resume 2019 Companies employing this approach should bear in mind that delays are becoming more and more common. You shouldn't read this answer to propose specific action or address certain conditions, but only to offer you an awareness of general principles of law which may impact the situation you describe. In your case as you are using premium processing, zero issues whatsoever, just continue working and in 15 days you'll receive the response from them. The degree requirement for the job is normal to the business or the job is so intricate or unique it can be done solely by an individual with a degree. Your specialty position needs to be with a U.S. employer who's ready to not just give you the position but in addition sponsor you for your H-1B. One the 1 hand, it's cheaper and simpler to have your status adjusted if you're in the U.S. with a distinct nonimmigrant status. Your resume should set you in a positive light.
